The 2004 Wailoa Show is underway!
Click on the link at the left for pictures of the current show as they are posted!...
Please bear with us, as there are a lot of pictures to get up on the site.
The Big Island Woodturners are a group of woodworkers that live mostly
on the Big Island of Hawaii. Monthly meetings are held in odd numbered
months, and the location rotates around to the workshop of various members.
A typical meeting involves the usual business information concerning finances
and legal information, upcoming shows and other things that the members should
know. There is a segment of announcements, where members share information
such as what wood that may be available for the turners. This way, more
people can benefit from trees that are being cut anyway, and less wood
is left to rot or be burned. After the general meeting, there is usually
a demonstration. New (and old) tools and techniques are discussed and shown,
usually with hands-on demonstrations, so each member can advance their skills.
At each meeting, a challenge is put to the members. Each challenge is
intended to cause the members to think about and turn something they
don't normally do. Pieces are brought to the next meeting, where they
are judged. Everyone gets to place a vote in each category, and there
is a prize for first place in each of three categories: Master, Advanced and and Intermediate.
A Master turner is anyone who has won two or more challenges.
Advance turners are those who won or placed in at least one challenge
and Intermediate turners have not won to date.
Each category has a first place award (about $30 value).
Hopefully this method encourages new turners to participate because
only those who have not won compete in the intermediate category.
Often, the challenge pieces are
donated to the club, and they are sold through galleries to raise money for
shows, demonstrations, and expanding the library of tapes and books.
A library of tapes and books are available to check out at a nominal charge, and
they are returned at the following meeting.
The association is a fun loving group of artists, and there is a special
comraderie between the members. Visitors are always welcome. For information
on the date and location of the next meeting, contact Millie Daikawa, Secretary
at 959-8243.
Art Shows and Exhibitions:
The Wailoa show was held March 16 through March 30, 2002.
There were several demonstrations on Saturday, March 23.

The Challenge for May 2002 was a turning of any kind of wood, but with something not wood
added (affixed or inlaid), Glass, metal, mineral, etc. Stands, chains, etc. did not count. Unfortunately, pictures
were not immediately available, and members are being asked to provide negatives to scan for that month's challenge.

The Challenge for September is something that looks like a basket. "Trash Baskets" don't count, so some creativity
and thought is expected. If July's entries are any indication, September should have some stunning
examples of diverse ways to turn an object that looks like a basket.
